Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession as a passionate hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit different areas nearby or in some cases other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you read along as we reveal the things you should know to start this hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to visit the library and get some books. You want to know as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you learn about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. You need to be as informed as possible.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Highly prized gemstones have colors that are close to the purest spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Muted gemstone colors or on the dark side lowers the value per carat.

The cut of your gemstone is an important aspect to consider when you consider a gemstone's value. The stone has to be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will not reflect light consistently over its entire surface. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will never be consistent.

Gemstone clarity is the next item to consider. When we talk of clarity it relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. The gemstone without flaws is obviously worth more. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will get an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to the difference of specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet. And if you travel to Canada you will find opal in the Okanagan, British Columbia or amethyst near Thunder Bay, Ontario and even amethyst from Nova Scotia. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

Hints On loose dimonds

Emeralds are hard but are sensitive and prey to flaws or inclusions. They
require a lot more care than most other gemstones. The flaws occur through the
trials imposed by nature, and sometimes the engineering process developed by man
. The identification of fissures, however, does serve a useful purpose. The
flaws help to weed out artificial emeralds from the real ones. Inclusions
actually prove an emeralds authenticity. Refraction and density of the stones
vary from the location where they are found. Emeralds are found buried in their
parent rock.
