So You Want To Collect Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology more as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to visit different areas nearby or in some cases other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If you have an interest in this hobby then follow along as this article discusses the in and outs of gemstone collecting.
The first step in becoming a gemstone collector the proper way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.
First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the farther they deviate from the pure natural color.
How a stone is cut is the second most important factor to look at before buying. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.
Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone being considered. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
Next comes size and weight. Other than the corals and pearls gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized sapphire or ruby would weigh 1.20 carats.
Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the United States in Florida you can find Chalcedony and Conch Pearl. And in Canada you can find opal in the Okanagan, British Columbia or pink and dark blueish spinels in Wakefield, Quebec along with Ammolite, a rare gemstone found only in southern Alberta. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.
