By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some reading material. You want to know as much as possible about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You will know exactly what you are looking at.

First, color is a major part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its purer spectral value the more highly prized it is. Traditional spectral colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that are paler or darker than the pure spectral color diminish the value of the stone.

Stone cut is the next factor to look at before buying. How precise the cut is will determine how much light the stone will reflect. It will ultimately ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much it will be valued.

Another factor to look at is the stone's clarity. This is talking about the stones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can give you an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Just in the United States in Texas You can find Beryl, Pearl and Tourmaline. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or check out the quartz regions in Mt Hope or Inverell, New South Wales.

The common opal is quite a departure from the precious opal. There are several
different types of common opals: the milk opal, opals with blue and green tints,
resin opal, and a wood opal. There are also opals that can be found around hot
springs and geysers. They are a clear glass opal made up of geyserite. There are
other varieties of opals most notably the fire opal and Peruvian opal. Mexico
and Mesoamerica is the chief source of the fire opal. They come from the Mexican
high country where they can be found in rock surrounding extinct volcanoes. It
is extracted from open-pit mines in the canyons and valleys there. It should be
noted that more durable fire opals are found in drier region. The drier the
region the more durable the opal will be. While Mexico produces the most fire
opals they can be found in Honduras, Ethiopia, United States, Australia, Canada,
Turkey and areas in former Russian states.
