Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. This article will examine the loose gemstones hobby.

To begin with your first priority is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. With adequate knowledge you are less likely to be fooled.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they have even lent their names to specific colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value they closer they are to natural spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the farther they are from the spectral color.

The cut of the stone is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase is made. The preciseness of the cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much someone will pay for it.

The clarity in a stone is our next factor. When we talk of clarity it relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A perfect gemstone is obviously valued highly. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see you need a 10X gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will employ a 10X jewelers were gemstone loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

Gemstones are often listed according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This is due to the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. For example in Maine you can find Tourmaline, Beryl, Rose Quartz, Pearl, Topaz, Amazonite, Clear & Smoky Quartz and Aquamarine. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or check out the quartz regions in Mt Hope or Inverell, New South Wales.

An opal is actually what is known as a mineraloid, a shapeless gel with silicium
dioxide that was deposited at a low temperature in crevices and fissures of all
different types of rock. The most common types of rock where they were deposited
are limonite, sandstone, rhyolite and basalt. It can also form original fossils
or replace fossils that have already been formed, and collectors find this
phenomenon very interesting. Opals are relatively young gems, and they are so
fragile they could never have survived early geological upheavals that produced
other types of stones. Opals did occur in volcanic masses of calcite that filled
the veins in lava rock. Hot, briny gel like mixtures would rise up to the
surface from the volcano which decomposed the calcite. What was left behind was
colloidal silica, and this along with water later produced opals.

So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose gemstones or loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit various local locations to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we discuss the different aspects of this hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand everything there is to know about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.

The chief thing you need to take into account is stone color. You'll want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure spectral colors. The spectral colors are violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices of very dark are very pale semiprecious and precious gemstones are less per carat.

The cut of your gemstone is an important factor to consider when buying a gemstone. The cut has to be done in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A poor cut will not reflect the light consistently. Color saturation, hue and tone will always look inconsistent.

Next up is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Any large flaws are visible to the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

Next on the agenda is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Olivine (Peridot), Sapphire or Onyx for instance. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in Minnesota you can hunt for Agate and Thomsonite.

In Australia, Cambodia and Thailand sapphires have developed over millions of
years from rich deposits of molten carbonatite that has a lot of aluminum mixed
