The first thing you need to do is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about precious and semiprecious gemstones. Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close to the purest spectral colors of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are muted or on the dark side can lower the value.
Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds but gemstones as well. An excellent cut will showcase the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision in gemstone cut is to consider how evenly it reflects light over the stones complete surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of the light will refract out instead of reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.
A third consideration is the gemstone's clarity. This refers to the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.
You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference regarding specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.
