The Diamond is the birthstone of April and the anniversary gemstone for the 10th
and 60th years of marriage. Diamonds were discovered in India in 500 B.C., and
the name "diamond" comes from the Greek word "Adamas" which means unconquerable
- suggesting the eternity of love. Since ancient Greece, diamonds and diamond
jewelry have been the traditional symbol of love, and the ancients believed they
were hardened dew drops, splinters from the stars or crystallized lightning. A
diamond is the hardest substance known to humankind, and is made of a
crystallized carbon that has unique powers of light reflection. Since diamonds
are composed of a single element, they are the purest of all gemstones.

So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Read long as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you know about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

Number one to look at is the color of the gem. Gemstones at the top of the ladder exhibit colors similar to the purest spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark can lower the value.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but you're gemstones as well. An excellent cut will showcase the gemstone's color, diminish any inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way to determine the precision regarding the cut is how consistent and well, it reflects the light over the stones complete surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting inside the gemstone. Gemstone color will be washed out.

Gemstone clarity is the next item to consider. Gemstone clarity relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. Generally speaking, a clearer stone is obviously valued highly. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see requires a gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Many hobbyists will buy an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different prices as well. This factor comes from the difference in specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Olivine (Peridot), Citrine or Zircon and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. For example in Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite.

The Tanzanite gemstone is a fairly recent find. Given the very difficult terrain
in which most of the Tanzanite is mined, it is no wonder that the price of this
gemstone is quite high. Tanzanite gets its name from the country in which it
is mined and that is Tanzania. The gemstone is quite hard but at the same time
is brittle. This brittleness makes the Tanzanite gemstone require special care
when wearing Tanzanite jewelry. One fact that is not so well known is that, the
Tanzanite gem stone in its original rough form is brownish in color. Heat
treatment is used to bring out the blue and purple colors of this gorgeous
gemstone.

Cleaning gemstones is easy. Simply soak the piece in a bowl of warm, soapy water for several minutes. Then use a soft, non-metallic brush to remove any grime. If you use a jewelry cleanser, make sure it is non-abrasive. Don't use harsh chemical cleaners, and be careful when cleaning the item in the sink because it can end up down the drainpipe. Also, keep in mind that some gemstones may have been treated or enhanced by heating, oiling, irradiation or diffusion. Heated and irradiated stones generally don't require special care when cleaning, but diffused stones could become lighter if scrubbed too hard.
