The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up gemology more as a hobby. They collect and evaluate loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to travel to different areas close by or to other countries to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If you have an interest in this hobby read along as we show you the things you should know to start this hobby.

First off you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying so you buy the right items. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

Color is a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer a color is to its purer spectral value the more highly prized it is. Remember that the spectral colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that are darker or paler than a pure spectral color tend to be less valued.

The cut of your gemstone is an important aspect to consider when buying a gemstone. The gemstone must be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A poor cut will be muted or washed out. The color hue, color tone and saturation will never look consistent.

The next factor to look at is the gemstone's clarity. This is talking about the gemstones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to the fact gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people loved to spend weekends to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Minnesota you can hunt for Agate and Thomsonite. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt specimens the quartz regions in Wave Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Collecting Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to travel to different areas close by or even taking a trip to other countries to look for raw gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we reveal the different aspects of this hobby.

At the very beginning you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. These materials are so related to their color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They drop in value the farther they are from the pure spectral color.

The cut of the gemstone is easily one of the most important aspects in determining gemstone value. The cut has to be done with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will be muted or washed out. Color tone, saturation, and hue will always appear inconsistent

The clarity of a gemstone is the next item to consider. When we talk of clarity it relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A perfect gemstone is obviously valued highly. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a 10X gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference in specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You could try collecting Feldspar (moonstone), Tiger's-eye or Benitoite and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. For example in Maine you can find Tourmaline, Beryl, Rose Quartz, Pearl, Topaz, Amazonite, Clear & Smoky Quartz and Aquamarine.

So You Want To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology more as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to visit different areas nearby or in some cases other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If you have an interest in this hobby then follow along as this article discusses the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

The first step in becoming a gemstone collector the proper way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the farther they deviate from the pure natural color.

How a stone is cut is the second most important factor to look at before buying. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone being considered. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

Next comes size and weight. Other than the corals and pearls gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized sapphire or ruby would weigh 1.20 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the United States in Florida you can find Chalcedony and Conch Pearl. And in Canada you can find opal in the Okanagan, British Columbia or pink and dark blueish spinels in Wakefield, Quebec along with Ammolite, a rare gemstone found only in southern Alberta. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with each and every one of the 150 varieties available. This article will examine the loose gemstones hobby.

To begin with you'll need the knowledge on each of the gemstones out there. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

First, color is a major part in the value of the stone. The closer the color comes to its purer spectral value the more valuable the stone becomes. Remember that the spectral colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that tend to be darker or palerthan a pure color diminish the value of the stone.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but along with your gemstones. A precision cut will highlight the gemstone's color, diminish any inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One excellent way to determine the excellence in the cut of the stone is to consider how consistently it reflects the light throughout its surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting inside. Gemstone color will be washed out.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. This means the purity of the stone or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but have different carat weights that result in different prices as well. This is due to the difference of relative density or specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt specimens the quartz regions in Wave Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia.
